THE STORY BEHIND …

“NOVACANE”

Death to life.

“Novacane” is a metaphorical story of going from death to life.

When I say, “I was six feet deep staring at the sun,” I'm painting the picture of a dead man buried in a grave—but still looking toward the light.

That light represents something greater.

The Son — Jesus Christ.

The song begins in a place of uncertainty. I don't know who I am. I don't know what I'm becoming. I don't even know if I'm chosen. Yet even from the grave, I'm looking upward.

Then comes the line:

“Holding my hand out for a hand out.”

It's not really about asking the world to give me something. It's the picture of reaching my hand toward God because I need what only He can give.

Life.

Not just a better version of the life I already had, but eternal life and a new life with Him.

I can't raise myself from the grave.

I need His hand.

As the song continues, that death begins to turn into purpose. I'm no longer just the man six feet underground. I'm talking about being sent on a mission, giving God the glory, raising my hands, being set free, and being brought into His family.

That's the heart behind “Novacane.”

It's the journey of a man who was dead, looked toward the Son, reached out his hand, and discovered that Jesus still gives dead men life.
